Kumuwuki / Big Wave
Kumuwuki / Big Wave was 2012’s Regional Arts Australia conference, held in Goolwa on SA’s Fleurieu Peninsula. The RAA conference was the biggest arts event outside the main state festivals — a biennial gathering held under the auspices of each state’s peak regional arts body, which in this case was Country Arts SA.
The project included a public website, a delegate registration and networking system, a session booking system, a lanyard creation tool, and smartphone apps for delegates and for checking-in at venues. Freerange Future helped Country Arts SA define the technology vision and scope, then built everything in-house using our Gluttonberg CMS and its Events suite.
Back in those days it made some sense to create all this from scratch. It was a bit of a beast.
What we ended up with was a self-contained technological ecosystem for the event. The website, the apps, and the event administration tools all ran out of a common Gluttonberg back-end, which meant one source of truth across every touchpoint. Register once, get your lanyard, book your sessions, check in at the venue — all seamless, all tailored to the event.
It’s the kind of project that looks straightforward on paper and turns out to be anything but. We came out the other side with a much better handle on what it takes to run digital infrastructure for a live, multi-venue event — and a lot of respect for Steve Mayhew and the Country Arts SA team who pulled together an amazing experience.
At the Event
Kumuwuki was an amazing project to work on, but the best part was attending.
BBQs, beach walks, board games and… a sensible amount of booze. Plus, you know, an arts festival and a conference.
Any conference or festival people reading this and thinking we might be a good fit? We’ll show up with our true selves.
Digital in 2012
Facebook went public. The mobile web overtook desktop for the first time in some markets. Responsive design went from niche technique to industry standard.
